Translational Optical Molecular Imaging: Nano to Micro

Eva M. Sevick-Muraca *

Ph.D., Carnegie Mellon University (1989)
Professor, Department of Radiology
Baylor College of Medicine

Research (Sevick-Muraca Laboratory)
Dr. Sevick-Muraca is a professor of Radiology and leads the Division of Molecular Imaging at the Baylor College of Medicine. She directs an interdisciplinary team that develops innovative techniques for small animal imaging and new molecular imaging agents to diagnose cancer. Dr. Sevick-Muraca is the inventor of NIR fluorescence enhanced optical imaging and author of over 100 peer-reviewed contributions in optical imaging and colloidal science. She is an adjunct faculty member Rice University; a panel member for the NIH study, biomedical imaging; elected officer of the Society of Molecular Imaging; and associate editor of the journals IEEE Transactions of Medical Imaging and Journal of Optical Imaging.

Education and experience
Dr. Sevick-Muraca received her bachelor of science and master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. In 1989, she earned a doctorate in Chemical/ Bioengineering from Carnegie Mellon University. She completed an NIH NRSA postdoctoral fellowship in biochemistry and biophysics with Dr. Britton Chance at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1991, Dr. Sevick-Muraca was an as assistant professor in the Departments of Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering at Vanderbilt University. While at Vanderbilt, she won an NSF Young Investigator Award and Whitaker Foundation Research Award. In 1994, Dr. Sevick-Muraca joined the School of Chemical Engineering at Purdue University, where she earned a DuPont Young Faculty Award, won a NIH Research Career Development Award, and was elected fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering. Dr. Sevick-Muraca was recruited to the Departments of Chemical Engineering (1999) and Chemistry (2002) at Texas A&M. During this tenure, Dr. Sevick-Muraca was the division head of the Photon Migration Laboratories, Dwight Look College of Engineering (2002-2003); special assistant to the Vice President for Research (2002- 2003); and an adjunct professor of the Department of Experimental Imaging and Diagnostics at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (2002- 2005). She is currently a professor and division head of the Division of Molecular Imaging in the Department of Radiology at Baylor College of Medicine and holds adjunct appointments in the Departments of Bioengineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rice University.
