Translational Optical Molecular Imaging: Nano to Micro

Konstantin Sokolov

Ph.D., Moscow State University, Russia (1992)
Assistant Professor, Center for Biomedical Engineering
The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center

Research (Sokolov Laboratory)
Dr. Sokolov's research activities are focused on the development of new optical imaging and spectroscopic modalities for pre-cancer detection and monitoring. His approach is based on the combination of advantages of in vivo optical imaging and spectroscopy, modern biophotonic probes for vital molecular imaging, and tissue engineering to improve the specificity and selectivity of pre-cancer detection and monitoring.

Education and experience
Dr. Sokolov received a Diploma Degree in Physics in 1987 from the Moscow Engineering-Physics Institute and doctorate degree in Biophysics in 1992 from Moscow State University, Russia. His prior work focused on biomedical applications of a state-of-the art optical spectroscopic technique – surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Subsequently, he carried out research in the field of optical spectroscopy of biomolecules and bioanalytical chemistry as an assistant researcher/postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Chemistry, Iowa State University; visiting researcher at the University of Reims, Reims, France; researcher/postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry Russian Academy of Science, Moscow, Russia. In 1998, he joined the Biomedical Engineering Program at the University of Texas at Austin as a research associate. In 2002, he became an assistant professor in the Department of Imaging Physics at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
